I am going to approach the subject not just from a religious point of view but from a wider, general and spiritual angle.
The term ‘dark night of the soul’ is derived from a poem by St. John of the Cross, who was a carmelite monk and a mystic.
When I use this expression I refer to the journey through life towards union with God, the universal spiritual consciousness and with all its many ‘problems’.
All those who seek to walk a spiritual path and work towards living in a spiritual way tend to go through a time of testing and pain. At this time the spiritual seeker will almost certainly experience confusion fear and uncertainty. When going through this time of spiritual development we can encounter considerable doubt regarding God in the widest sense. I believe this to be true, in any of the religious paths that we might follow.
When we go through these difficulties and ultimately come out of the other side of the experience, we will find a great feeling of peace, serenity and union with God and spirit.
The dark night of the soul can happen several times during your life’s ‘work’ and spiritual journey.
