Guidelines for working with clients with severe spiritual problems:

There are several points to bear in mind when working with clients who live in fear. They are desperate for help and have previously worked with maiiy other spiritual therapists, doctors, psychiatrists and counsellor's. These clients believe that they are possessed, cursed, and can not get away from a cult, other organizations or ‘religious groups'.

- Always work with the belief system of the client and suspend your own, if it conflicts with the clients.
- The client’s problems often seem impossible to change for the better until we, ‘the therapists’ learn to speak their language.
- Manage your own feelings and emotions, especially FEAR disbelief, skepticism etc, as this will depower you and your defenses against any negative ‘forces’ from wherever they might come.
- Remember that a client can often pick up your feelings, beliefs, emotions and attitudes. intuitively as they have previously, normally been told many contradictory things by other therapists. They have not been believed or listened too.
- One must be a good listener and have empathy with the cilient's beliefs and problems.
- You must gain a good rapport with your client.
- You must build trust between you and your client, as doubt will cause failure.
-You must endeavor to change the client's negative thinking to more positive thinking. e.g. If they believe there is no hope, this will be self-perpetuating.
- Be patient, calm, and positive at all times.
- Do not allow your energy to be taken, nor give it away, unless you can replace it as this will disempower you, demotivate you and cause considerable tiredness.
- Do not endeavour to ‘rescue’ the client, as this will prevent them from ‘moving forward’. It will also tend to take away their own determination to be healed. Enable and support them to do this for themselves.
- Do not allow the client to become dependent on you, the therapist, as this will also disempower them.
